Grand Rapids Wedding Affair

We are so excited to share the images from the Grand Rapids Wedding Affair 2009 held at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Hopefully you were able to join us and stop by the A Modern Event booth. We had had samples of our latest cake shooters and a few wedding cake displays including a croquembouche, a traditional French wedding cake. Please enjoy the images and remember, Sweet Cakes Design is able to make all of these creations and many more for your wedding and events.

Here is a variety of our cake shooter. My favorite, the Autumn Spice, caramelized apples with a moist spice cake topped with caramel butter cream. Yummy!

This massive 6 tier wedding cake came to life when we added the feathers. This beauty is such a wonderful eye piece for any event.

A croquembouche is a tier of filled pastries that have been glazed and then stacked upon each other. The tower is then wrapped in spun sugar and accent with gold embellishment of flowers. The Sweet Cakes girls had a great time creating this and are looking forward to making more for upcoming weddings. Thanks to the Michigan Wedding Photographer of Harrison Studio for the images!

How to Hold a Bouquet

Your bouquet is something you have hand selected to reflect you and your wedding style. You’ve spent hours upon hours choosing the perfect shade of flowers for your bouquet and when it comes time for you to walk down the aisle, you want to make sure you are not only comfortable holding your bouquet but both your dress and bouquet are photographed perfect.

Here are a few tips on how to hold a bouquet:

1. Bend your arms 90 degrees. Let the weight of your bouquet bring your arms down just a touch further. The bouquet should rest about belly button level and your forearms should be resting on your hip bones. Your arms should feel comfortable, we don’t want them turning into jello mid ceremony!

2. Show the front of the bouquet. If your bouquet has a brooch, bow or decorative piece make sure it’s facing forward. If your bouquet is only flowers search for flower that stands out. If you are having trouble finding the front, ask your florist!

3. Grasp the bouquet gracefully. Don’t hold the stems to tight and don’t interlock your fingers. Save that for the hand holding!

4. Finally, it’s okay to sass up your bouquet shots after the ceremony. Maybe hold the bouquet with one hand to your side or better yet, have your new husband hold it for you!

GR Wedding Affair 2009

The crew from A Modern Event will be attending the Grand Rapids Wedding Affair 2009, held at the Grand Rapids Public Museum from 5-9 Friday October 16. This night of fashion, bridal decor, the latest trends and the hottest vendors Grand Rapids has to offer is going to be fantastic. A Modern Event will be creating a fabulous booth and can’t wait to show everyone our new eye candy!

Barb is cooking up extra special treats for everyone to try, Ben and Laura will be displaying their beautiful images and Jodi is going to knock your socks off with her talent. Modern Day Floral will be seen in a few different places throughout the night so be sure to stop by the JW Marriott and Design 1 booths and of course the Modern Event tent. Art Prize

What a great day to live in Grand Rapids!

Today is the opening day of Art Prize. In case you have been hiding under a rock for the past few months, Art Prize is a city wide event that allows artist from all over the world to find a location in downtown Grand Rapids to display their art. There is art hanging from buildings, across bridges and in the streets. Their art will be displayed for two weeks. At the end of the those two weeks, a winner will be chosen.

Modern Day Floral will have the honor of designing floral decor for a few of the Art Prize events over the next two weeks. Jodi, of In Any Event designed and planned each of the galas! Enjoy the next few weeks and feel free to stop by our studio located on 125 Monroe Ave. Suite 170

scott + jessica : missoula, montana wedding

This post is a bit late so thank you for your patience! At the end of August, we traveled up to Missoula, MT to document the beautiful wedding of Scott & Jessica! Scott and Jessica met in Missoula when they both attended the Rocky Mountain School of Photography a few years back. Originally, Scott & Jessica were to be married in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, but due to the swine flu epidemic that struck Mexico in the late spring/early summer … they decided to cancel their wedding and move it up to Montana (which is where Scott lives). So after planning a wedding in Mexico for over a year, they completely changed their location and started from scratch and planned an entirely new wedding in a few short months. The wedding day went off without a hitch ….the ceremony & reception took place at the beautiful Ranch Club just outside of Missoula and the flowers were done by the wonderful team at Habitat. Check out all the creative “montana-esque” details they were able to pull together in such a short time period!

We were so honored to have the opportunity to document this wedding … To: Scott & Jess, you guys are amazing people that have such beautiful hearts. Thank you for allowing us to come all the way from Michigan and be a part of your intimate day. We loved every second of it and we hope you love your pics! Cheers you two!

the joys of having two photographers … ben captured jess & her dad coming down the aisle and laura captured scott’s face as he saw his bride walking to him! so beautiful!scott & jessica had such wonderful parents … you can see the emotion of both of the fathers.

Two Tiered Mini Cakes

We had the pleasure of working with Chasity and Andy this summer for their June wedding. This couple had fantastic ideas and wanted each guest to have a special and unique treat. Jenn Marie from Jenn Marie Photography sent over a few fabulous photos of the couples two tiered mini cakes. Guests received their own wedding cake, well a mini version of course!

Mini cakes can be ordered for a variety of occasions. Just this past weekend we received on order for mini cakes to be used at a tea party.

I just want to send a little thank you to my team at Sweet Cakes Design. Each and every weekend they produce gorgeous work and the detail and time that went into each two tiered mini cake is why I’m proud to work along side of you. Thank you!

Fall Flowers

I hope everyone had a warm and wonderful summer but believe it or not, fall is right around the corner. Kids are back in school, soon the colors will change, and a chilly breeze will be here before you know it. However, in Michigan, fall is one of the most beautiful times of year to get married. The firey colors are oh-so inspiring when creating bouquets and centerpieces.

Dahlias are a fantastic fall flower. They come in a variety of shades and we have a wonderful local grower we love to use.

Elegant Simplicity

Just a few weeks ago we had the pleasure of working alongside our business partners and photographer extraordinaire, Ben and Laura Harrison. In typical fashion they did a beautiful job capturing this simply elegant wedding.

I’m absolutely in love with kissing balls and our latest twist to the typical flower ball is the use of wicker/twine orbs.

The bridal bouquet was a romantic collection of hydrangea, vendella roses, freesia and stephanotis. The bridesmaids carried a smaller clutch style replica of the bridal bouquet minus the stephanotis.

The Imperial ballroom at the Amway Grand Plaza is an incredibly elegant room which is very large. In an effort to create that “wow” factor on a limited budget 40″ vases were used containing 6 ft. green curly willow adorned with white dendrobium blooms, lush white hydrangea and votives.

I’m a firm believer that details make all the difference whether big or small. I absolutely love the menu card and charger, although plastic it still helps to set a gorgeous table.
